Galvan Industries Earns National Award For Excellence

HARRISBURG, NC -- A one-of-a-kind pedestrian bridge, using hot-dip galvanized steel reinforcements supplied by Galvan Industries, has earned the company its most recent national award from the American Galvanizers Association (AGA).

The new $4.5 million Liberty Bridge in Greenville, SC, is the first structure of its kind in the U.S. that is both curved and cantilevered. With its 90-foot-high suspension towers that lean 15 degrees away from the walking deck, the 330-foot-long bridge seemingly floats above surrounding landscape. The structure offers pedestrians spectacular views of the Reedy River and its falls.

The Liberty Bridge won Galvan the 2005 award for hot-dip galvanizing excellence in recreation and entertainment structures. In 2004, the company was honored with the AGA's Most Distinguished Award for hot-dip galvanized components used in a parking deck. AGA opens its annual competition to engineers, architects, contractors, fabricators and galvanizers who use galvanized steel.

Rosales, Gottemoeller & Associates served as architect on the bridge project; Schliach Bergermann provided engineering services. Architect Miguel Rosales specified hot-dip galvanizing for the Liberty Bridge's reinforcing steel and bridge cables "because I want this bridge to stand for as long as possible without any maintenance to the concrete deck or corrosion of the steel reinforcement."

Since 1958, Galvan Industries has provided the ultimate in corrosion control to steel fabricators and manufacturers. The first hot-dip galvanizing operation in the Carolinas, the company has grown to become the largest capacity contract galvanizer in the Southeast.
