Galvan Industries Marks 50th Anniversary With Expansion At North Carolina Location

Harrisburg, NC -- In an era when domestic manufacturing and metal services firms are moving more toward consolidation, international ownership and foreign outsourcing, a family owned and operated business can still make an impression.

Galvan Industries is celebrating 50 years of successful business in 2008 by expanding and nearly doubling its facility in this Charlotte suburb. In the last year, Galvan acquired an additional 10 acres of land with 40,000 square feet of manufacturing space. The new facility, complete with up-fitted office space, adjoins the original Galvan facility where company President Laurens Willard's father and uncle established the business in 1958.

"Given the existing domestic manufacturing climate where companies have merged, become multi-national or simply moved offshore, not many businesses make it to 50 years intact," Willard said. "We have been successful by supplying the best customer service in the industry and marrying that with outstanding technical support and product quality. By forging alliances with our customers, we have been able to match our products and services to the needs of changing conditions and markets."

After years devoted only to custom galvanizing, Galvan grew a relationship with a local electrical products distributor into a complete Electrical Products Division. That division provides grounding rods, clamps, connectors and accessories to the worldwide construction, utility and telecom markets.

Recently, Galvan developed a patented process for applying thick copper coatings to steel rods. That copper plating innovation made Galvan the only manufacturer in the country producing both galvanized and copper plated ground rods. "Development of the Electrical Products Division in conjunction with the existing galvanizing division has provided us with a 21st century version of the traditional ice and coal business," Willard said. "The markets are different and change with different cycles, protecting us from the extremes seen in other businesses."

Galvan's expertise in hot dip galvanizing has kept it in the national spotlight in recent years. In three of the last five years, Galvan projects have earned national awards. Notable projects have included Douglas International Airport, Lowe's corporate headquarters and Metrolina Greenhouse in Huntersville, NC -- the world's largest greenhouse. Also, Galvan served as galvanizer for the U.S. National Whitewater Center, a unique Olympic training center for whitewater kayaking and canoeing located near Charlotte. Galvan continues to provide protective coatings for OEMs throughout the Carolinas for products ranging from farm equipment to highways.

"It has been a great 50 years," Willard said, "a milestone that motivates us."
